The Amazing Race Asia 2: Finale Episode

February 16, 2008

EPISODE 13

After crossing multiple continents, and gracing the shores of 10 countries, from Singapore, New Zealand, Germany, Hungary to South Africa, three teams have made it to the top three spots, but only one team can win The Amazing Race Asia.

Will it be hunky Marc and Rovilson, whose charm and ability have put them in first place in eight of the eleven pitstops, or will it be buddies Collin and Adrian, who, despite Adrian’s hearing impairment, have managed to creep up and give Marc and Rovilson a run for their money? Or will sisters Pamela and Vanessa repeat history, and be the second Malaysian team to win The Amazing Race Asia?

GAME ON
Knowing that this is the last time they will get to be the first team to leave the pit stop, Marc and Rovilson are now gunning for the top prize. So far, the hunks have fulfilled two of the four goals they set for themselves, namely not to get eliminated and to be in the top three teams. Their third goal was to win the leg in Philippines, but they were beaten by Pamela and Vanessa for that.

Competitors Collin and Adrian are also looking to see this race through to the end. "One of our goals was just to reach the top three and we did it," notes Collin.

And even with the same objectives, which is to win, Pamela points out that there is another common experience shared by the three teams. "All top three teams are teams who have won a leg," she points out.

From the Aquila Game Reserve in Cape Town, South Africa, teams must head to the District 6 Museum to receive their next clue. Named after the Cape Town area where residents were forcibly removed from their homes, the museum serves as a reminder of those events.

Using a Sony Vaio notebook, teams must unlock password on the notebook using the original street names found in District Six. Rushing to the museum, teams are immediately struck by traffic woes. "I’m ready to win and we’re stuck (in traffic)," says Pamela, "Do you think it would be terrible if we break the law of the city?" And right on cue, Vanessa cuts out of the main road and starts driving on the road shoulder towards District 6.

Marc and Rovilson are the first to the museum, and immediately start keying the street names into the notebook, hoping to unlock the clue. After a few random tries, the duo unlocks the clue, which tells them to read one paragraph off the wall, which describes the history of the district, before they will be given the next clue.

Collin, Adrian, Vanessa and Pamela arrive at the museum together, and both teams are working side by side, trying to be the first to break the password. But both teams have to be careful, in case the other team overhears the street name that happens to unlock the notebook.

WHAT’S THE FREQUENCY?
The next challenge is a Detour and teams must head to the Vitoria and Alfred Waterfront, more commonly known as the V & A Waterfront.

In Search, teams must head to The Scratch Patch, where a collection of tens of thousands of tumble polished gemstones lie, waiting for visitors to bring them home. Within the sea of multicolored stones, teams must pick up three specially market stones for their next clue.

In Assemble, teams must make a traditional wire radio out of a collection of parts. Once the completed unit is able to receive radio signals, teams will receive their next clue.

Marc and Rovilson pick Search and head to the Scratch Patch, but are immediately overwhelmed by the vast number of stones located in the patch. The objective is to pick out three yellow stones with a red dot on it. "You know what? That radio thing is looking real good right now," says Marc. His partner agrees and the duo switches to Assemble.

The second team to get the password, Adrian and Collin read the paragraph and receive their next clue. It seems that the guys do think alike as the gym buddies also pick Search as their choice. Meanwhile, Pamela and Vanessa complete the museum task and pick Assemble.

Arriving at the Scratch Patch, Adrian and Collin as equally overwhelmed by the thousands of stones in front of them. "When we saw the pebbles, we thought, how on earth can we find the three marked pebbles?" exclaims Collin. "We gave ourselves 10 minutes." But it took them less than that to locate their first marked rock. This sealed the decision for the buddies and they continue to try and locate the other two.

In just one try, Marc and Rovilson complete their radio, which proves to be music to their ears when they were handed their next clue. At the radio shack, the sisters find themselves sitting along with the radio parts and figure that Adrian and Collin must be searching for their rocks.

GOAL! (PART 1)
Teams must now head to the soccer field at FC Kapstadt, which is located next to the site of the 2010 World Cup. They must score three goals from the penalty line to get the next clue.

But it seems that soccer isn’t the pastime of the two Filipinos. Despite multiple tries, both Marc and Rovilson fail to score even a goal. In the end, Rovilson jokingly tries to bribe his way to the clue. "Listen," he tells the goalkeeper. "We’re going to win $100,000. If you lay down, I’ll spot you 10 grand." He then quickly corrects himself. "Pesos," he quickly adds.

As luck would have it, Adrian and Collin locate the remaining two rocks and are headed to the soccer field. Pamela and Vanessa try desperately to complete the radio, but Vanessa pricks herself with a tool. "I should win the award for the most injured," she laments. "I lost my memory. What else? I lost my memory right? I can’t remember the others."

But they sisters soon fine tune their radio, and are rewarded with the clue as well.

Teams must now head to Atlantis Dunes and ride an All-Terrain Vehicle, or Quad Bike, around a sand course. Located in the course are 18 possible containers, with only one containing the necessary clue. The other 17 contain an hourglass. If teams open a container with the hourglass, they must flip it and let the device run its course, before continuing to their next clue.

The first team to Atlantis Dunes, Rovilson is in awe of the jaw dropping beauty of the sand.

"We were like, on another planet, it was indescribable." Naturally, the first clue they open contains an hourglass and the duo have to wait for the sand to run out. Rovilson responds, "I feel like a storm trooper."

Adrian and Collin get to the dunes, as Marc and Rovilson open up yet another hourglass.

"This is insane," points out Rovilson, as they sit waiting for the sand to run its course and see another team tearing across the dunes. "Collin and Adrian are here, hot on our heels."

Upon realising it is yet another driving task, Pamela cannot help but roll her eyes. "Anything can happen in the sand dunes, anything can happen on the road," she says.

Her sister chimes in, "Anything can happen on the road while I’m driving."

GOAL! (PART 2)
As Marc and Rovilson open yet another hourglass filled container, Adrian and Collin have their own problems. The back wheels of one of their Quad bikes sinks in the sand and is unable to move. The duo tries their best to free the vehicle, only to free the back wheel and lodge the front wheel in the sand.

Soon, the sisters arrive and six drivers are now roaming around the area, searching for the correct container.

As Marc and Rovilson sit waiting for another hourglass to empty, they see Adrian and Collin zip past not one, but two containers in a row. Puzzled, the duo can only wonder what the Singaporeans are up to. "What are they doing? They didn’t pick up the last two pods," Marc wonders. "I don’t know what their strategy is actually, but it has us concerned."

It seems the gym buddies do have a strategy that counts on watching for the tracks on the sand, to see if another team has already opened it. Explains Collin, "We came up with a strategy for alternate ones. If we keep on opening all, it will be difficult." "The ones they have stepped on, it means it’s not there."

Realising their strategy, Rovilson is already forming a plan to outsmart the gym buddies.

"Now, it’s become a chess game. Sneaky little guys." As it turns out, Marc and Rovilson open up their next container, to discover the clues within it. Instead of jumping for joy though, the hunks simply sit down in the sand.

Why? Adrian and Collin are just right behind them, at another container. Their intention is to act as if they uncovered another hourglass, and as waiting for the green light to move on. "I don’t mind waiting until they pass us," says Rovilson. "We’re testing our acting skills by pretending we have an hour glass, waiting for time to go by, explains Rovilson. "Hopefully, Adrian and Collin pass by this and onto the next one."

The Amazing Race Asia 2: Episode 12

February 11, 2008

With four teams left, the race is now on for a spot in the top three positions, towards the final grand prize. After spending most of the race behind Marc and Rovilson, Adrian and Collin are on top, but can they still maintain the lead, with sisters Pamela and Vanessa, together with mothers Ann and Diane, gunning for them?

From Gellert Hill and the Citadel in Budapest, Hungary, teams must now catch the next flight which will bring them to Cape Town in South Africa. They must then make their way to Signal Hill, a landmark location in the city.

With $200 for this leg of the race, Collin and Adrian are the first to leave the pitstop at 8.10pm. Far ahead of everyone else, the duo makes full use of their early lead and head directly towards a computer.

"We are going to a nearby hotel for internet access, where we can do proper research," explains Collin on their game plan. Their objective is not towards the front of the line, but just to be in the top three teams for the final leg.

But despite their best efforts, there is nothing online that will bring them a significant lead. The other teams pick up their clues, and are surprised by their next destination.

"We could not believe we would be going all the way to South Africa. It was crazy," points out Vanessa.

But putting things in perspective is her sister, who feels this is a chance for them to take the lead.

Arriving at the airport, Marc and Rovilson are first to notice that Adrian and Collin are nowhere to be found again. Did the Singaporeans manage to outsmart the rest and skip ahead?

Quips Rovilson, "They are probably setting up a website and chatting with someone from Cape Town already."

Sports: PBA - ALASKA SQUARES SERIES AT 2-2

February 5, 2008

ALASKA SQUARES SERIES AT 2-2
Miller explodes for 27 in scary win
Sunday, 03 February 2008

ALASKA got Sta. Lucia Realty precisely where it wanted it: In a shootout.

And the Aces thrived on the OK Corral-like setting, pulling off a 90-83 victory Sunday evening to even up their 2007-08 Smart PBA Philippine Cup semifinals series at two games apiece at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Willie Miller scored a game-high 27 points and the rest of the Alaska starters also came up with double figures each, the bulk coming during a big fourth quarter breakaway that finally broke SLR’s back.

The Realtors showed grit by coming back from a 26-point deficit, but the Aces made coach Tim Cone prouder after showing more resolve in coming back from an 82-91 defeat the last time out and weathering Sunday’s storm.

“We could have taken a step back after losing two tough games (earlier in the series) but we did not,” said Cone. “We came out breathing fire, played some defense and kept battling and challenging them and gave ourselves a chance.”

The way Sta. Lucia chiseled the deficit to just 60-62 and 74-78 could not be ignored, however.

“They (Realtors) could have began thinking about Game 5, but they did not. They made it a battle and my hats off to them,” said Cone.

“We know how good they are, how tough they are and they’re showing great character in that team. It’s tough to compete with that hunger and that’s something we have to do,” he added.

Take You There Lyrics

YO!!!!
WAT A GWAAN!!!
WAT A GWAAN!!!
HAHA!!!
HO!!!!
SEAN KINGSTON!!!
J.R.!
MONEY!!!

[Chorus]
We can go to the tropics
Sip piña coladas
Shorty I could take you there
Or we can go to the slums
Where killas get hung
Shorty I could take you there
You know I could take ya (I could take ya…)
I could take ya (I could take ya…)
Shorty I could take you there
You know I could take ya (I could take ya…)
I could take ya (I could take ya…)
Shorty I could take you there

Baby girl I know it’s rough but come wit me
We can take a trip to the hood
It’s no problem girl it’s my city
I could take you there(take you there)
Little kid wit guns only 15
Roamin’ the streets up to no good
When gun shots just watch us, run quickly
I could show you where

As long as you’re wit me
Baby you’ll be alright
I’m known in the ghetto
Girl just stay by my side(my side)
Or we can leave the slums go to paradise
Babe it’s up to you,
It’s whatever you likeee

[Chorus]
We can go to the tropics
Sip piña coladas
Shorty I could take you there(OH!!)
Or we can go to the slums
Where killas get hung
Shorty I could take you there
You know I could take ya (I could take ya…)
I could take ya (I could take ya…)
Shorty I could take you there
You know I could take ya (I could take ya…)
I could take ya (I could take ya…)
Shorty I could take you there
[Take You There lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

Shorty come wit me it’s no worry
I know the bad men them where I stay
Police fly pursuit in a hurry
This is no gun play
Don’t be scared I know the West Indies
It’s Jamaica, that’s where I’m from
Might see something you’re not used to
Welcome to the slums

As long as you’re wit me
Baby you’ll be alright
I’m known in the ghetto
Girl just stay by my side
Or we can leave the slums go to paradise
Babe it’s up to you,
It’s whatever you likeeee

[Chorus]
We can go to the tropics
Sip piña coladas
Shorty I could take you there(I could take ya there..take ya)
Or we can go to the slums
Where killas get hung
Shorty I could take you there
You know I could take ya (I could take ya…)
I could take ya (I could take ya…)
Shorty I could take you there
You know I could take ya (I could take ya…)
I could take ya (I could take ya…)
Shorty I could take you there

Or we (or we)

To a place (to a place)

Michelle Williams breaks silence on Ledger’s death

February 2, 2008

Williams, Ledger

NEW YORK (AP) — Michelle Williams broke her silence Friday, saying her "heart is broken" over Heath Ledger in her first statement since the "Brokeback Mountain" actor’s death.

The 27-year-old actress and Ledger became a couple during filming of 2005’s "Brokeback," in which they costarred as husband and wife.

They later settled in New York, and had a daughter, Matilda, born October 2005.

"Please respect our need to grieve privately," Williams said in a statement. "My heart is broken. I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father. All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day."

Ledger, 28, died in his Manhattan apartment January 22. Authorities suspect a possible drug overdose, but the cause of his death is still pending the outcome of toxicology tests.

Police said several prescription drugs were found in the Manhattan apartment where the actor’s body was found.

"His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still," Williams said. "She will be brought up in the best memories of him."

Actor Heath Ledger dies at 28

art.ledger.obit.gi.jpg

NEW YORK (CNN) — Actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday of a possible drug overdose in a Lower Manhattan apartment, the New York Police Department said.

The Academy Award-nominated actor was 28.

Ledger was found naked and unresponsive, facedown on the floor at the foot of his bed by a housekeeper trying to wake him for an appointment with a masseuse, said police spokesman Paul Browne.

"Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed," he told CNN.

"This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet."

Browne later told reporters some prescription medications were found in the room, including sleeping pills.

But he stressed police have made no determination of the cause of Ledger’s death — that would be done by the medical examiner.

He said the pills were not "scattered about."

No note was found and there was no indication of foul play, Browne said. Ledger was found at about 3 p.m., and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel about 3:30 p.m.

A crowd of onlookers, photographers and reporters gathered outside the apartment building after news of Ledger’s death was reported. Police officers were guarding the doors.

Browne said he did not know how long Ledger had been renting the apartment, which he said took up the entire fourth floor.

An autopsy would be conducted on Wednesday, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner’s office.

Ledger’s family called his death "very tragic, untimely and accidental."

"Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life, but few had the pleasure of truly knowing him," his father said.

"He was a down-to-earth, generous, kindhearted, life-loving, unselfish individual extremely inspirational to many."

Hollywood reacts

Condolences began pouring in from Ledger’s friends and co-stars.

"I had such great hope for him," said Mel Gibson, who played Ledger’s father in "The Patriot," in a statement.

"He was just taking off and to lose his life at such a young age is a tragic loss. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."

Actress Nicole Kidman, a fellow Australian and close friend of Ledger’s, said in a statement, "What a tragedy. My heart goes out to his family."

At the time of his death, Ledger had just finished playing the villain The Joker in "The Dark Knight," the latest installment in the Batman series. The film is to open in July.

Ledger was born in Perth, Australia, and named Heathcliff Andrew after the main characters of Emily Bronte’s "Wuthering Heights." He began acting at a local theater as a child.

Ledger’s first American film was the teen comedy "10 Things I Hate About You" in 1999, and he immediately attracted attention from Hollywood. He passed up several scripts before taking a role in the Revolutionary War drama "The Patriot" in 2000 and "A Knight’s Tale" in 2001. He also played a supporting role in "Monster’s Ball," among other films.

"In a way I was spoon-fed a career," he told the Glasgow Herald in 2005. "It was fully manufactured by a studio that believed it could put me on their posters and turn me into a product. … I hadn’t figured out properly how to act, and all of a sudden I was being thrown into these lead roles."

Controversial role

But Ledger was perhaps best known for his 2005 portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain," about two cowboys who had a secret romantic relationship. The role earned him an Oscar nomination.

"I felt that choices were being made for me, so I feel this has been my time now to find the good stories and test myself," Ledger told the Glasgow Herald in the 2005 interview. "It has been an interesting year, where I finally have a sense of accomplishment."

Asked how he felt about filming love scenes with another man, Ledger said he and his co-star Jake Gyllenhaal simply focused on their roles.

"We can’t say that we weren’t nervous about it," Ledger told Oprah Winfrey in 2006. "But once the first take was over, it’s like, ‘OK. So what? It’s kissing another human being. How are we going to finish this scene? Let’s get on with it and let’s get out of here.’ "

In a written statement, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said it mourns Ledger’s death, adding that his portrayal of Del Mar "changed hearts and minds in immeasurable ways."

Ledger has a daughter, Matilda Rose, born in 2005 to his then-girlfriend, Michelle Williams, who played his on-screen wife, Alma, in "Brokeback Mountain." The couple have since separated.

"He was just so respected in the industry," said Kim Serafin, senior editor of In Touch Weekly.

"It’s just horribly tragic. He was just a fine actor and a good person, so this is horribly sad and very unexpected."
